Public Health Nutrition in Pakistan:

NFP (Nutrition foundation of Pakistan) and FANS (Food and nutrition society) arranged a one day conference on “Public Health Nutrition in Pakistan”. The objective of the conference was to highlight the issues responsible for persistence and escalation of nutrition problems in Pakistan.
SESSION 1
9:00-9:15 am
The conference was started by the name of Almighty Allah. Recitation was done by Hafiza Aqsa Amin.
9:15-9:30 am
Welcome speech was given by Ms. Hina Qazi, in which she welcomed the Chief Guest and Guests of Honor in particular and gave a brief review on Nutrition Foundation of Pakistan and Food and Nutrition Society.
9:30-10:00 am
The keynote speaker Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi (VC Dadabhoy University) could not attend due to an emergency, her scheduled topic The Role of Food Quality and Safety in Assuring Good Nutrition was reviewed by Assistant professor of RLAK CHE, Mrs. Sadia Idrees.

Prof Dr. Rubina Hakeem highlighted need and techniques for assuring quality And effectiveness of Nutrition program in Pakistan.
10:45- 11:00 am
Dr. Zeeshan Shaikh (Consultant Nutrition Support
Program, Sindh) shared information about nutrition interventions
being taken in Sindh.
11:00-11:15 am
Q/A session was also held followed by shield distribution to speakers.

SESSION 2
11:30-12:00
Dr. Rubina Hakeem highlighted the determinants of Nutrition in SINDH identified through the result of Sindh Nutrition Survey Conducted by Nutrition dept. Of RLAK CHE in 2016, an ex-student who collected data for this survey shared her observations in Thar.

Ms. Meena Iqbal, (Assistant Manager-Indus Hospital Diabetes Management Program), delivered a lecture on “Diet and Nutrition Issues in Pakistan.

VOLUNTEER COMMUNICATIONS
In this session three volunteers presented their researches conducted on different public health nutrition issues in Pakistan.

TOPIC: “Knowledge, attitude and practices of elderly regarding type II diabetes mellitus attending diabetic clinic at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH), Rawalpindi.

CLOSING SESSION
Conference highlights
Conference highlights was given by Dr.Rubina Hakeem. The conference concluded that there is dire need for comprehensive and coherent actions with accountability for actions, and effectiveness of program could not be assured unless there is central body of competent nutritionists who can effectively steer PHN programs and coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders.
